Major upgrade but computer won't start after GPU install

Bottom line up front: Upgraded nearly all components inside computer, it won't boot after installing the new graphics card

 

So I decided my factory stock PC needed a major upgrade.  I bought the following components:

 

Motherboard: MSI B550 Pro-VDH Wifi

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600

GPU: Sapphire Pulse AMD Radeon RX 580

 

I also bought two 16GB RAM sticks (DDR4.)  The computer also has a 600W power supply that I upgraded to a year or so ago.

 

I got all components installed nicely except the GPU (it was later in arriving thru the mail.)  The old card (NVIDIA GeForce GT 1030) is holding up until I can figure out the new GPU.  Everything worked great.

 

Problem: Computer would not turn on once I got the new GPU installed.  Everything seemed to be seated correctly.  Power cables to GPU plugged in.  (The power cable says VGA and not PCIe on it, but I'm led to understand that's OK?)  At first nothing whatsoever happened when I hit the power button.  I had messed with the cable that attaches the power button to the motherboard (the new GPU is a monster compared to the old one and I needed to shift things around), so I reseated it.  I gave the button a few clicks and it finally started, or seemed to.  But, the monitor had no signal from the computer, and I didn't hear the little beep indicating a good startup.  Fans were running inside (though I admit I should've, but did not, check to see whether the GPU fans were going, or just the CPU cooler, or neither.)

 

I pulled the new card and reinstalled the 1030 and everything booted right up, no problems.

 

I thought I might try installing the RX 580 drivers, but they wouldn't install since the hardware wasn't present.  PC Part Picker indicated the RX 580 should be compatible with the new motherboard.

 

This is my first go at installing/upgrading hardware more complicated than a new RAM stick or a power supply, so I was pretty pleased with myself that everything worked so well at first.  But I can't figure out this GPU.  600W ought to be plenty, so I don't think it's that.  Any ideas?

So if using the same boot drive as you were before then you are loading all the information for the other system.

For your information the Motherboard is 4yrs old.  Not a Upgrade.

 

As well we do not know what BIOS your running ... Current  is : v2K    Released : 2024-03-20   See video on how to install.

A clean Install would be the way to go.

Then after installing Windows you disconnect from the internet and you install your already saved Drivers from your Motherboard Support Page  https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/B550M-PRO-VDH-WIFI/support  starting with the Chipset then SATA and so forth to the lower drivers.  Video card is 3rd.

 

As well would need to use DDU to remove the other drivers and info and reinstall new drivers. If not clean install. 

As well Sapphire Pulse AMD Radeon RX 580 does not tell us enough === is it the 8gig, 20 gig

Does this mobo require a BIOS update? Many of these do now or you will never boot the unit. Some require the update before installing the CPU.

No.  I was able to boot and run the computer completely before installing the new GPU.  The motherboard came with a driver CD, which I dutifully installed when that came up.  I think it went online and looked for new drivers, too, though I can check when I get home.  But I should be up to date on the BIOS and driver situation.  Everything went smoothly and the PC works really nicely with all the new hardware (CPU, mobo, RAM) up until the point of installing the RX 580 GPU.  I didn't swap out the hard drive, so the boot drive and Windows install are all the same as before - it's like the same computer, but faster.  I just can't get it to work with the new GPU.

 

I'll check out all the stuff Pkshadow asked for when I get home from work.  The RX 580 GPU is the 8GB version, that much I know.

Here's just a wild shot, but....many of these cards are used ex-bitcoin mining cards, and you might investigate whether the card will work in your BIOS' EFI mode; may have to enable CSM in the BIOS.

That can lead to headaches; truthfully, I suggest returning the card. No card should give you these problems. Your problem is definitely the card, not your system.

I did buy the thing off of eBay.  It doesn't seem to be the sort of eBay store that sells overused junk (unlike perhaps the "similar listing" from seller "shopcryptoworld") but I guess, who knows really.

 

I decided to plug it in again and leave the case open to see what was working.  All the fans inside were turning - the CPU cooler as well as the GPU fans.  And I heard the hard drive spinning up as well.  But - no bootup still.

 

Got the old 1030 back in and all is well again.

Do not rely on MSI Center...as it as mentioned did not find your Support Page.  Is It :=}

 

Turn off anything in BIOS that Speeds Up the Boot example ASUS Fast Boot for the same reasons as below :

UNINSTALL : C:\Program Files\AMD\RyzenMasterSDK use your just released Chipset Drivers.

 

Then install all your Drivers you may have missed.  Put the CD of Drivers away in a safe place and never use them again.

You Download and Save all Your Drives from your Support Page.   NOTE : Your System is moving out of Support and they have already removed most all previous drivers from the page.

During a Install it also asks if have them on the system. 

Though most often not.

So you install Windows with UEFI Support.  Get off line asap so Microsoft does not start stuffing in it's drivers. Do Not Take Optional or Otherwise Drivers from MS if at all possible. (there is but)

Install your (NEW 2024-03-06) Chipset and reboot and then SATA Drivers, Video Card, On-board Video  followed by the Lesser Drivers and lots of reboots.

 

With your issue it could be that you are working from a Backup Copy.   I See that there is a Raid Driver on the Support Page so if installed in Raid then new drive will never work correctly.  Clean Install.

 

NOTE All Drives must have 15 % or more free at all Times.  The WD is : Free Space: 68 MB (14%)

Question: how much of the above is really likely to cause the computer to boot correctly with the RX 580, and how much is general good housekeeping principles?  The RX 580 came out 7 years ago, and the motherboard and chip are newer than that.  I appreciate the suggestions and will work on them, but given that the card is the oldest aspect of this setup, I'm not sure why the drivers and BIOS shouldn't have been up-to-date enough, right when the hardware came out, to handle that GPU.  I'm still confused as to why the PC could power everything up and then not boot.

Ok simply put the RX 580 may not work on the newer board, period, Does not have what it takes to run on a modern Motherboard.

If it is a private individual, I can almost guarantee that it was used as a mining card; possibly it failed so he is dumping it for as much as he can get. If from Amazon or Newegg, they should accept returns. I have been down this road many times in builds and with others' builds also. You will spend hours/days/weeks trying to get it to run and if you blow past your return deadline, you are up a tree without a ladder.

Took your advice, went to Best Buy and got a new RX 580 out of the box, plugged it in and presto, better graphics.  The most likely defective one can and will be returned.  PC upgrade complete.  (Though I may add a solid-state HD in the future.)
