Additional information:

1.  The Seagate utilities can be used as a generic hard drive diagnostic for any drive, regardless of manufacturer.

2.  Another generic freeware diagnostic tool available is that known as MHDD,

3.  There are any number of 3d-party paid tools which can also provide credible diagnostic capabilities.  These tools will generally also include a trial version  which will offer basic functionality for a limited period, be it 30 days or whatever.  These trial versions can be used in the event that someone needs/wants to run a diagnostic on a hard drive.  Of course...the paid versions may also be used, although I don't suggest anyone pay for a hard drive diagnostic when free tools are available.

Just to add a quick tip...

If you happen to be moving a hard disk across platforms, such as moving a hard drive from a Mac to an Intel or AMD based system I discovered that you can also use an older version of Windows such as 98SE (because it supports large hard disk format) that will re-format and wipe the disk upon installation but it MUST BE a full install disk and not an upgrade. This will convert the hard drive to an NTFS drive readable for any other version of Windows. I did this after realizing I had purchased a secondary drive for an older HP Pavilion DV9000 and found it had come from an Apple system. I realize most people don't have a factory disk copy of older versions of Windows but after 25 years of using, repairing, upgrading and troubleshooting computers I've found it very handy not to throw anything away.

Have you mis-remembered what you meant to suggest here? 98SE doesn't support either 48-bit LBA or NTFS.
