I have this inexplicable problem from yesterday

Each time i start my laptop by pushing the physical power button in, the laptop keyboard and touchpad are available to me for use when the system has booted to the desktop (I can enter the bios by pressing on F10 too) irrespective of whether the laptop is powered by the AC adapter or the battery. This is normal behaviour

BUT NOW FOR THE ABNORMAL PART

However, when using the laptop normally, if i choose restart from the power options, the touchpad and mouse are non-functional when the system has booted to the desktop (I am unable to get into bios too) irrespective of whether the laptop is powered by the AC adapter or the battery.

All updates to-date are installed

The keyboard and mouse drivers are up to date

i have re-updated the bios too

I restored an earlier image of my OS (when this problem did not exist) dating back to Jan 2024 but the above problem recurred leading me to believe that this is a hardware issue

Summary:

Cold starting (booting) the laptop - KB or mouse available

Warm restarting (booting) the laptop - no KB or mouse available

Yes the laptop was opened to tighten the lid hinges and to replace the TF03X battery (i believe that this laptop HP Pavilion x360 does not have a CMOS battery to pull

Can someone please point me in the right direction with respect to this problem

Thanks

Sorry but you have post on a tech forum asking for help but have provided zero information about your computer,  this makes it impossible for anyone to be able to point you in the right direction.

I suspect a driver issue.

Please provide the brand and model name or series number (not serial) of the notebook + which OS you are running.

Summary:

Cold starting (booting) the laptop - KB or mouse available

Warm restarting (booting) the laptop - no KB or mouse available

You cannot enter the BIOS from a restart only when you are 100% outside of Windows, as in a cold boot, reason for this is because a restart does not end all Windows processes, this is how a computer is able to get you to a working desktop faster than when you start from a cold boot.

Apologies for not providing details above

Laptop Brand and Model:  HP Pavilion 14 x360 series

OS:  Windows 11 x64 23H2

i too thought it was a driver issue initially....but i did restore an earlier image of the same laptop (when such problem was definitely not there) and the issue recurred  in that environment too.

Further, there are no yellow triangle marks in device manager, no updates available for the (synaptics) touchpad or KB and the "this device is working properly" remark is seen even when the mouse and KB is non-functional (i.e. after a restart)

This is why i thought it is an internal HARDWARE issue

Thanks for answering

Have you tried running the Keyboard Troubleshooter?  That's in System > Troubleshoot > Other Troubleshooters > Keyboard > Run.  (edit - Seems MS is deprecating this tool, but it can still be found by typing keyboard troubleshooter into the search box - it shows up as "Find & Fix Keyboard problems".)

Another thing you could try is removing the devices in Device Manager and then selecting scan for new hardware, which should force a redetection.

It's an odd problem - particularly that DM shows that it's working when it's not.  If it's a physical cause, my guess would be a ribbon cable that most likely connects the keyboard to the mainboard could be the issue.

I would also disable Fast Startup if enabled. It uses a hiberfil.sys file and if this file gets borked strange things can happen. You can disable it by opening an elevated command prompt and typing

powercfg.exe -h off

Shutdown and reboot.

You can enable Fast Startup again by substituting on for off.

Does anything change when you reset your BIOS/UEFI setting back to default?

No nothing changes when BIOS is reset

Here is what i discovered further

Cold starting (booting) the laptop with battery power or after disconnecting and reconnecting  AC power - KB and mouse available

Warm restarting (booting) the laptop - no KB nor mouse available

Its something in the continuous power supply that is preventing the KB and mouse from functioning and when the supply is shut off and restarted there is no problem

That is strange and fwiw I will explain my train of thought, when you first power up the BIOS uses generic kb and mouse divers that are mapped onto the BIOS chip and that is ow the devices are able to function there, once the BIOS has found a bootable OS it hands over control to that and likewise Windows 10 and 11 have generic drivers available for most third party hardware and this is how and why the devices will work once you have initially booted into Windows, my thinking was that it is the generic Windows drivers not getting loaded after a restart.

The HP support site is having issues at the moment so you can`t even get a driver auto detect and update.

Most likely a dead end because you have reloaded a previous image of the OS but have you checked the USB port suspend settings, info courtesy of Brink over at the Windows 11 forums here

Post i addition to the above to ensure that the OP gets notification.

Perfection,

The below from your post elsewhere regarding this same issue;

I know this will appear like a duplicate post from me...but mods the previous post was hijacked to a discussion of CMOSS-less battery laptops AND i have some fresh insights to my problem to share and request possible solution

We are always happy to help when we can but we cannot safely do so if you are already receiving assistance on any other forum, doing so may lead to confusion as to whose and what guidance you are following which can be both dangerous and costly, decide on which forum you wish to continue and as a courtesy let the other/s know that assistance is no longer required.

Thank you for your understanding.

Yes you are right BC advisor - it was sheer desperation that m me do this....I just wanted some hints as to what direction to look at.  At first i did not even know whether it was a software or hardware problem and there was nothing like this anywhere on the net.

issue

Now i am beginning to believe it is a hardware issue

Sorry if i broke any guidelines here

One way to determine if this is a hardware problem but would require a replacement drive is to install a linux distro like Mint Cinnamon on it and see if you get a KB and Mouse after a reboot.  You could also install linux Mint alongside Windows but I don't think that would be a good solution as removing linux after an install alongside Windows can go south.
