I have 3 old hard drives from dead laptops that I was going to discard and am wondering if there is a very cheap universal USB cable (or USB adapter) or separate USB cables that you would recommend so that I may use these drives.  I've searched some but am not sure if the cables I'm viewing would work with these drives, or if it is even worth the hassle:

1. Toshiba 1724

2. Hitachi DK23EA-60

3. IBM IC25N040ATCs04-0

This adapter will work on IDE or SATA drives. 2.5 or 3.5". It comes with a power adapter for 3.5 drives.

The Toshiba is a special situation. That is a 1.8" mini drive. It has it's own special connector. I'm not sure there is an adapter for it.

Thank you for the quick reply with links.

That explains why I was getting lost on finding a connector for the Toshiba.

Still not sure what I'd do with them even with an adapter...

At it's simplest the adapters mentioned by JohnC connect to a computer by the USB cable shown in the image. Once you have the adapter connected to the hard drive you plug the USB lead into any convenient USB port and use File Explorer to copy the data you want off these old drives onto a functioning computer.

Another issue with the Toshiba 1.8" drive is that is uses 3.3V instead of the normal 5V.

It's an ATA ZIF connector

Not sure if these are the correct ones for that particular drive, but you can often find solutions on Amazon.

Great, nice finds.  I'd have to look closer to see if they'd work, but at least now I have more information so I can search around to see if I can find a suitable product.
