Hi,

Dell Optiplex 7050: W10

I tried to install Opera on a USB, but I noticed the following,

'This installation of Opera cannot be made your default browser'.

How can I make it Default Browser on the USB, please?.

Thank you.

There are two different editions of Opera Portable, the official Opera portable | Opera.com and the unofficial Opera Portable | PortableApps.com.

As such, if you tried using the official Opera Portable, please try using the unofficial Opera Portable, and both browsers are legitimate and reputable.

There is also an online search result on How can I make Opera Portable the Default Browser on the USB?

Good luck! :)

You tempted me to try the experiment although by the time I did it I was some way away from your topic and I didn't try to set it up as default. - my bad !  Certainly there were the options to select it as default but I didn't take advantage of them. If you click on the 'Settings' icon there is the option, once installed and running, to make it the default. Have you tried that ?

I can testify that it works as a portable browser although it failed to run on my own laptop, probably because it is an elderly Fujitsu Amilo with a 32 bit OS but it worked on my wife's - considerably younger Lenovo - laptop without any problem. I downloaded the installer to the memory stick I was going to use and when I ran it the default install location was C:\Users. I changed this to the memory stick and the install proceeded as normal. Installation was a little slow, probably because I was using a USB 2 stick and it takes a little longer to load than my normal on hard drive browser but that is also to be expected. Once loaded it runs very well.

I do wonder how well the 'Default' setting would work if you don't have this USB connected. Obviously Opera won't run but if you  have more than one browser on your system does it become a matter of luck which one opens, or will the default then become Edge ?  And if you intend using it all the time on your computer(s) would it not be simpler and quicker just to install it to the hard drive ?

However, if you still cannot make the official Opera portable | Opera.com or the unofficial Opera Portable | PortableApps.com the default browser on your USB and would like to install the official Opera on your computer, please get it from here: Opera | Opera.com.

You can also install the official Opera | Opera.com and the unofficial Opera Portable | PortableApps.com on your computer. Still, you cannot install the official Opera | Opera.com and the official Opera portable | Opera.com alongside each other on your computer.

The rationale for the above is that, in my experience as a web browser enthusiast, I have tried to install the official Opera | Opera.com and the official Opera portable | Opera.com alongside each other on my desktop-only computer, but then, I discovered the following:

Upon installing the official Opera | Opera.com and the official Opera portable | Opera.com, the official Opera portable | Opera.com automatically replaced the official Opera | Opera.com, and this is by design from the Opera browsers' developers, and cannot be overruled.

However, just for the record, if you would like to use two variants of the Opera browser on your computer, you will need to use the official Opera | Opera.com and the unofficial Opera Portable | PortableApps.com, upon which these browsers will work properly together. :thumbup2:

Nonetheless, I would NOT recommend running the official Opera portable | Opera.com and the unofficial Opera Portable | PortableApps.com simultaneously because that might cause a compatibility issue. But anyway, I have NOT tried to do so myself, so this is just a heads-up.

I would like to emphasize that, unlike the official Opera | Opera.com, which does update itself automatically, the unofficial Opera Portable | PortableApps.com does NOT update itself automatically, and this is also by design, so every time a new version is published:

If you want to keep it continuously updated, you will need to reinstall the unofficial Opera Portable | PortableApps.com on top of the previous version, which might sound somewhat weird, but I can confirm that this works quite well on my computer, so it is also worth remembering.

But anyway, hopefully, you will enjoy using the unofficial Opera Portable | PortableApps.com on your USB or the official Opera | Opera.com and the unofficial Opera Portable | PortableApps.com on your computer because I use these browsers and many other ones.

Good luck! :)

Many thanks for all suggestions.

I have used the info to satisfactorily resolve the issue.

The reason for a Portable Browser is for when I need to use a Computer away from home.
