After I setup a saver I want and click apply and ok i wait the for the time. it goes and comes and no screen saver. I go into the screen saver and it has reset it self to none. it's got me confused. Please help

Hi, Welcome to BC.
Remove Avast with it.s Removal Tool and if Paid deactivate Subscription 1st.
Remove CCleaner it would be deleting files your system needs including the screensaver.
If Malwarebytes has a toggle to Registry with Microsoft Security Center turn that off.
Activation, are you using a VPN ??
Please type in Start Search Troubleshooter and run the one for Updates, and if one for Search. If do not run let us know.
Note : Visit your HP Support Page : Would think that since this system is so old that the HP programs should be removed if not already and that manual updating has been lax.as per below update from MS.

It is better to run with out a Screen saver. Should change screen turn off time rather than run a program that is needed for nothing.
Note : this is just a quick overview. Until AVAST and CCleaner is removed will not know for sure as there is problems that can fixed with other means but if it is only the above stopping things then it would be futile to try other things at this time.

Thank you for the information.
TMALSS, the screen saver issue is the least of this computer's problems.
There is a alot going on with this old, second-hand computer.
In addition to the issues already mentioned, there are problems with critical Windows services, such as BITS.
And with only 4 GB RAM, it will never run very well with 64-bit Windows 10.
Having said that, if you want to try to fix the screen saver issue, these tutorials may help:

If this were my computer, I would consider wiping the hard drive & cleanly reinstalling Windows 10, or switching to Linux.

There is a alot going on with this old, second-hand computer.
In addition to the issues already mentioned, there are problems with critical Windows services, such as BITS.
And with only 4 GB RAM, it will never run very well with 64-bit Windows 10.
Having said that, if you want to try to fix the screen saver issue, these tutorials may help:

If this were my computer, I would consider wiping the hard drive & cleanly reinstalling Windows 10, or switching to Linux.

No,,,, No hope for a old HP. AVAST removal tool , CCleaner Removal should tell us if BITS issue is caused by them or is a system issue.
Until these are done and rebooted from a complete shut down with MS Fast Start disabled : https://www.windowscentral.com/how-disable-windows-10-fast-startup
Will not know the true cause of screensaver, BITS/Update issue, ACTIVATION, Defender issue (Defender ranked in top 10 of A/V Avast is not needed)
EDIT : Windows 10 End of Life October 2025. Suggest future proof on a new system that can do Win11 and above and has 16gig of ram

Remove : Avast Update Helper, Glary Utilities 6.10 , S.O.S. Security Suite (can not run more than 1 A/V at a time) , Wise Disk Cleaner
All the above will cause system errors and problems.
