Much cheaper to move to Linux or 11 in the long run. Less confusion.

Sounds like a good way of forcing everybody onto the newest version as rapidly as possible.....

(*shrug...*)

But Linux IS an excellent option nowadays, and is far simpler to use than many still think. The days of doing everything through the command-line are now so far behind us it isn't even worth discussing any more. Many new users find they can do everything via point-and-click GUIs.....and many never go anywhere near the terminal (unless they WANT to).

It definitely warrants serious consideration.

Even if and when Windows 10 Extended Security Updates are available for home users like me, I will NOT purchase and use it because, by October 14, 2025, my current third desktop-only computer will be 10 years old.

Then, it makes sense that I will instead buy a new pre-built desktop-only computer with Microsoft Windows 11 Professional 64-bit Norwegian Retail because I have a routine of acquiring a new computer every 10th year.

However, I know I could likely save money by just upgrading. Still, I am NOT a computer user who enjoys using various hardware components without remembering their exact age, and I do NOT have many spare parts.

Nonetheless, there is a chance that Microsoft will eventually release Windows 12, but when that will be is anyone's guess, so it will be essential to consider using the then kind of 4-year-old Windows 11 (or even Windows 12).

I know that Windows 12 still does NOT exist and might never exist either, but that is likely a topic for another discussion because, after all, Windows 11 was a surprise, so maybe Windows 12 will be a surprise, too. :)

Thank you, cryptodan! :)

However, there are two different reasons why I do NOT want to use Linux:

The first one is that I already several years ago tried some Linux distros, such as Ubuntu Linux, Lubuntu Linux, and Kubuntu Linux, but none of them would work at all. :(

And one of them (but unfortunately, I do NOT still remember which one) even displayed an error message that my MSI ATI AMD RADEON R9 390X GAMING 8G Twin Frozr V graphics card is INCOMPATIBLE with Linux. :(

The second one is that I use extremely many Windows-based 3rd-party software, but I do NOT want to resort to using WineHQ. :(

I DO notice that you are using Arch Linux, but just for the record, I am NOT going to try any more Linux distros. :(

Linux has advanced in ways youll never understand. I use Linux as a primary operating system across 2 devices and not once have I ever regretted switching. You only tried one linux and that was Ubuntu hence all the names contain the word Ubuntu.

Your graphics card is very well supported in Linux now with amdgpu.

How long ago was this?

"Several years ago" is very vague as if the last time you tried linux was back in the mid 2000s things have changed drastically since then.

Heck even if the last time you tried it was last year same thing as linux is always getting better.

yes your radeon card may not be supported by AMD on linux but soon you will have the exact issue if you have windows.

Windows is not some magic bullet, it only "works" because it came pre installed on your machine.

That dell/HP/acer/whatever always come with windows out of the box with drivers in tow.

A fresh install of windows will certainly have the same issues as linux, I assure you.

But whatever, throw perfectly working hardware into a landfill and contribute to the E waste issue that both microsoft and apple want so badly and buy a new PC because you're unwilling to give linux another chance.

Enjoy the ads, pop-ups and the other annoying crap bundled with win 11.

Planned obsolescence at its best.

Thank you, cryptodan and MadmanRB! :)

On June 08, 2018, you replied to my topic on Microsoft: If your device is >3 years old, you may not be able to enjoy new apps, Post #7 wherein you tried to encourage me to try Linux and I did.

However, Microsoft Windows 10 Professional 64-bit Retail Norwegian did NOT come preinstalled on my 8.5-year-old computer because I assembled it myself with help from my dad in November 2015.

The last time I successfully performed a clean install of Windows 10 was in April 2017 but whenever I tried to repeat that in the future I always ended up with the OS hard-hanging with the Event ID 41.

Upon my computer freezing like the above, the only solution is to Disk Image recover my desktop-only computer with Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office Essentials, which always works impeccably.

I have been using and still am using Windows for nearly 29 years on three desktop-only computers. The first and second ones were prebuilt, but as mentioned, the third was self-built and works okay.

I fully respect that you use Linux and promote it, but you need to understand that I will continue to use Windows, and so far, I have NOT experienced any ads in Windows 10 or any other OS edition.

I understand you enjoy using Linux as your primary OS and Windows as your secondary OS in a virtual machine or dual-boot, respectively. (But Windows 11 supports your AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D CPU.)

However, as a hardware newbie, I wonder if Nvidia, AMD, and Intel graphic cards work just as flawlessly on Linux as they do on Windows, but then again, you have much more hardware experience than me.

My dad (80) has been using and still is using Windows and has 34 years of personal experience with various Windows editions, from Windows 3.0 through Windows 11 Professional, on a laptop PC and a desktop PC. :)

Linux runs nvidia hardware far better than windows and with much greater improvement in frame rates and over all hardware acceleration.

The same goes for AMD and even better for a intel video cards.

I have vms I use if I ever want windows applications and I use linux on 10 year old hardware built in 2014. It's just far superior to that of windows with farless data collection and other security things which you need a thousand applications on windows to achieve.

This topic started as a discussion of the potential cost of Windows 10 ESUs after 10 reaches end of support.

It has now been fully hijacked & has devolved into a Windows vs. Linux "debate" with bashers & fan-boys on both sides.

Please pass the popcorn!
So much fun in forum-land!

I'm a user of both, so I know the value in each as I've used windows since 1993 and linux since 2001.

Both have value but linux has more bang for the buck and is a lot better than say 10 years ago.

As i already understand about Microsoft they are just into making as much money as they can, from my past dealing with their Office 365 and trying to get a refund and after days of trying being declined because they say i missed the 30 day deadline, i don't ever want them to offer me anything  again and i just wish Microsoft would stop e-mailing me with new program offers i can't even unsubscribe to their e-mailings.

I have an older ASUS computer still running Windows 7 and it works great and i am not alone running it, as for windows 10 i just wish my new MSI Stealth had had Win 10 installed, sadly it has Win 11 and removing it will cancel my new systems warranty.

Like my Win 7 i feel Win 10 will work just fine without getting any updating from money grubbing Microsoft.
