A recent update for Windows 10 on my pc added this new feature to the corner of my taskbar, something called Microsoft Copilot. As I understand it it's some kind of AI chatbot for Windows 11 that they decided to port to Windows 10 for whatever reason. I never really used AI tools that much mainly because the good ones require money to use, would this copilot thing be potentially useful to me, or is it too much of a security risk and should be removed ASAP?

Hi:

In addition to @hamluis's excellent guidance....

It is part of Edge and therefore cannot be removed/uninstalled like a standalone program without breaking something (because of the many dependencies within Windows).

You *can* hide the taskbar button if it really bothers you:

Or you can just ignore it.

Additional (somewhat confusing) discussion here:

Edited for typo correction

I asked Co- pilot how it worked. It gave a surprisingly complete answer.
Boiling it down it's here to stay, or so it says, It's baked into Edge which in turn is baked into the OS.
You can hide it a bit but it'll jump out every chance it gets.
That said it can produce very well reasoned answers to quite complex questions. Given Google search is now pretty useless I've used the Co pilot AI a bit recently.

I see. Very well then, guess I'll make the most of it even though I'm not 100% sure what I can/will do with it.

It's just another aspect of computing that...until it came along, users thought "good enough" of their systems.  If it's native to the system/O/S...we all will come to find that it really is an enhancement that is meaningful...in terms of our future use.  Today, it's a "new toy" that we don't know how to play with...a year from now, it will not be such :).

The hardware and software developers have always been ahead of the public...when it comes to developing something "new" that will eventually become the "norm".  A good case in point would be "hard drives" versus SSDs and the giant hard drives that oldtime users had to get used because we were from the era where now-considered "small hard drives" are just a thing of the past that we occasionally attach to our systems...to see if they still work.

My suggestion is to hide the button on the taskbar and then occasionally try out Co-Pilot in Edge. I've been asking it questions about current legilation as it relates to charities. i'm updating all of the core policies of a charity at the moment. It comes back with surprisingly accurate answers and the good part is you can ask it clarfying questions. So if it nearly gives the answer you need you can go back and say "yes, but what about..." and it'll see the context and provide more information.
