Keyboard not working

I have an HP Pavilion g6 running Windows 8.1

My son turned this laptop off at the power point at the wall and now my keyboard will not work.It appears that the keyboard drivers have been corrupted.Is there any way that I can reinstall/update my keyboard drivers using only the touch pad/mouse ? If I press F10 on startup I can get to the login screen,but obviously as the keyboard does not work anymore I cant logon.

I have a Windows 7 desktop PC as well so if I have to download drivers or something to transfer to my laptop there is no problem.

If all else fales is there some way I can do a non destructive factory reset using only my mouse/keypad ?

HI, use your Desktop keyboard if it is a USB and plug it in and see if when boot if it installs a driver for it.

 

If that fails or do this : https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/log-windows-without-keyboard/

 

Note : HP Pavilion g6 is not the full name of the model.  The rest of it should be on the bottom. Provide that and will search for your Support Page or use that plus the word  - drivers - in a search to find the page.

Hi,Thank you for your quick response.My keyboard is connected by Ps2 ( yes I know,its to save on usb slots ) anyway I got into the PC using the on screen keyboard ( as you suggested ) I think more than my keyboard driver got corrupted so can you direct me to the support page for this laptop please.I looked on the back and there is only a small square sticker saying "windows 8" There is a number on it,it is 1849 I dont know if this means anything.Thank you so much.

Hi, Welcome.

 

The 1849 refers to the Motherboard Model # in this case if I have that correct from a post i read.

 

HP Pavilion G6 there is just too many models with out the proper info. Is possible any keyboard driver from the series would work.  Most have been replaced with MS Keyboard drivers from 2006

 

From Start copy/paste : System Information into Start--> Search and Enter and might show proper model info there as well as Bios Version.

As well can Click on Components then Input and figure out what driver you have for the keyboard and what info is available for it and see if can dig it out of another Support Page for G6

if there is no further info on the Model from above.

 

Or : https://support.hp.com/ca-en/drivers use the auto identify to find your page.  It should switch to your country and language.  If not change ca-en to your country and language 2 lt code.

 

Has this been formatted clean and the Recovery Partition destroyed ?? as can Restore then go up.

Since you maxed out at 8gigs of ram why not put Linux Mint on to it.  Will have to do so regardless if still have this by Win10 End of Life mid year 2025.

EDIT: Must update to Win10 before can do a clean install.

Hi guys, Here is the latest on what is happening with my laptop.

I managed to get "Device manager"and according to that the keyboard is working ok although I still cant type anything.I have been using the onscreen keyboard and that is a real pain.I cant get on the internet,I have checked in settings and run internet troubleshooter and apparently everything is ok there as well.IMHO there is a lot of things wrong and trying to fix them one at a time is going to take forever.IMHO the best thing to do would be a factory reset.Any advice on how I can do that without using the keyboard ? as I said the mouse and touch pad work allright.

I really appreciate all the help/advice you have given me so far.

You stated that you could gain access to the system via on screen keyboard.   Knowing not the ideal way yet does the system work correctly?

 

Purchase an inexpensive and or barrow a working one from someone and see if that works as well.

 

since you said that you can access the Device Manager open the keyboard list

select the Keyboard

Press the Delete key then Uninstall (from the popup)

One that completes reboot the system and allow Windows to reboot.

 

This will recreate the keyboard reference in the Device Manager.  If successful, the keyboard will work if not well.

 

Best thing to do is have a USB keyboard for a backup even if your PS2 hiccups you have one.

I have decided to give up on this PC.The reason is that now I cant even logon using the on screen keyboard,because ( for some reason ) now when I get to the logon screen the place where I enter my pass word is full of dots.It is as if a key is held down ( the whole pass word part ) is full of dots and I cant deleat them with the on screen keyboard.

As I mentioned in a post recently,I think there is a lot of things wrong with this PC and not just the keyboard.Every day it seems to be a new problem.It started with the keyboard not working,then I could not connect to the internet ( although I checked settings and the internet settings are ok ) now its the login screen with ( what looks like a 10/15 letter pass word ) already entered.

FYI I tried a friends USB keyboard and the keyboard lit up ( blue lights ) but the keys did not work....... Another problem ?!

IMHO this PC is not worth the hassle any more ( its MUCH MUCH too frustrating )

I will check again tomorrow in case you want to suggest something else but I am at the stage now where I could gladly dump this PC, and good riddance.

Just a thought: Disregard the dots and put in the password by whatever means you can

Thanks again for your input/help.I tried that when I first got the dots.Typing over them does not help because there are more dots than my password and I tried deleating the dots but that does not work either.It might have worked if I could use my keyboard but using the on screen keyboard ?!

Did you try? Just doing a carriage return, when you have entered the last character of your Password, ignoring any following  dots

Yes,I tried that.I also switched the PC on and left it on till the battery ran out.I did this to clear the memory,which it did but as soon as I tried to log in ( with no dotts ) the dotts appeared again.

My son has offered to buy me a new PC but I have decided that we can go 50/50.

As I said in an earlier post,as soon as I work something out,something else goes wrong.IMHO switching it off at the wall did more than just stop the keyboard from working.Its not worth the hassle,im going to buy a new one.

Just a thought, as it's a lappy, take the battery out and turn it on, with no power source.

 

After a few minutes, put the battery back in and try turning it on again.

Everything is as in my last post.As for switching the PC back on again,I took the battery out,switched it on and left it on all night.I tried it again the next morning and I have explained what happened in my last post.Thank you for trying to help but I think it is now a case of,the PC needs a qualified technician to get it going again.

Method 1: Use the Windows 8.1 Recovery Environment

The Windows 8.1 Recovery Environment is a special environment that you can boot into when your computer is not working properly. It allows you to access a variety of troubleshooting tools, including the ability to reinstall or update drivers.

To boot into the Windows 8.1 Recovery Environment, follow these steps:

  1. Turn on your computer.
  2. When you see the HP logo, press F8 repeatedly.
  3. When the Advanced Boot Options menu appears, use the arrow keys to select Repair your computer.
  4. Click Next.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to boot into the Recovery Environment.

Once you are in the Recovery Environment, you can follow these steps to reinstall or update your keyboard drivers:

  1. Click Troubleshoot.
  2. Click Advanced.
  3. Click Startup Settings.
  4. Click Restart.
  5. When your computer restarts, you will see a list of startup options. Use the arrow keys to select 5 (Disable Driver Signature Enforcement).
  6. Click Enter.
  7. Your computer will restart and Windows will boot without driver signature enforcement.
  8. You can now reinstall or update your keyboard drivers.

Method 2: Use a Windows 7 PC

If you have a Windows 7 PC, you can use it to download the latest keyboard drivers for your HP Pavilion g6. Once you have downloaded the drivers, you can transfer them to your laptop and install them using the touchpad/mouse.

To download the latest keyboard drivers for your HP Pavilion g6, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the HP support website.
  2. Enter your laptop's model number.
