My Windows 8.1 computer takes a long time to return from hibernate.  Like 10, 15, 20 minutes.

It takes only 3>4 minutes to start from a shutdown.  This has been going on and maybe getting worse for months.  I have tried many cleanup, check disk, Optimize and other "recommendations" I have found but nothing works.

I plan on upgrading to Windows 11 when I receive the new drive I have ordered but I would feel a lot better if I cleaned up this problem first.

Any ideas?

Most likely just a corrupted OS and or a failing HDD.  Please follow THIS TUTORIAL LINK to get us some details.

3-4 minutes is a long time, should be 1:30 if on an HDD, less on and SSD.

If I don't reply right away it's because I'm waiting for Windows 10 to Update.

New Update

I have been doing a lot of work on this and have a BIG update.

I bought a SDD and cloned my HDD to it.

It exhibited the same problem but then I did some more experimenting and found....

You are not going to believe this!!!!

If I shutdown and restart as soon as the power button light goes out, it boots in seconds...like 20 or 30 or 40.

If I shutdown for hours (like 3 or 4 hours) it will take 15 or 20 or 25 MINUTES to boot up.

I have confirmed this over and over.  Anytime I hit the power button to startup soon after I shut down it boots in seconds.

If I shutdown and go away for a few hours it takes many minutes to boot up.

HOW CAN THAT BE?

Like PCPunk stated there is corrupted OS and or a failing HDD.

Since you just cloned the HDD to SDD you copied the errors and issue over to the SSD.

why you should ALWAYS preform a fresh install when having certain issues.

Download and install Speccy - https://filehippo.com/download_speccy/

Run it, and then go to File and Publish Snapshot. Post the resulting link in your next reply

Then

Download and install min-toolbox from here: https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/minitoolbox/

I ran MiniToolBox but I'm not sure what you wanted there.  Nothing is checked in the image and the Items you listed, "Last 10 error.......... ", etc don't seem to be in the list.

Here is my ntbtlog.txt

What else do you need?

Thanks,

Pete

Note that in my post #3 NEW UPDATE it is happening when I shutdown also.

My RAM is maxed out on this desktop.

I have been using hibernate on this desktop for around 7 years.  I topically shutdown once a week to get a "clean start".

I am uploading the MiniTool files and will provide a link when I am done.

I would definitely shutdown or reboot more frequently with your ram and especially since you are possibly using this machine for development work with python and sql installed.

Yep,

But, every time I shutdown for just a few minutes it boots in just seconds.

If I leave it shutdown for a few hours it takes many minutes to boot.

The short boots take 20 or 30 seconds.

The long boots take 15 or 20 minutes.

I have repeated that experiment many many times.

I thought I could compare a boot log (ntblog, txt) from a long boot to one from a short boot but the short boots don't appear in the boot log,  WHY?

Is there some other way to log what is happening during a boot?

I feel like i can hear the theme from,"The Twilight Zone" playing in the background.  ;-0
