Hi all,

I'm currently thinking about buying a brand new laptop PC. I was thinking of possibly getting one with a SIM card slot built in so I could get online with it while being mobile using 4G LTE wireless network. This would be my first such laptop. I'm assuming you have to specifically look for a model with both a SIM card slot and wireless 4G LTE network ability built into it, correct? Also, I'm guessing you won't find this feature on brand new bottom-dollar/low-budget/value laptop PC's correct? Probably only mid-range/mid-price and above laptops would have this feature, correct? Is there anything else I should know or watch for when shopping for such a PC? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

There are a quite few laptops/notebools with 4G-LTE, in all price ranges, just search "4G LTE Laptop"

For example the Samsung Galaxy book range can take a Sim card.

Or just choose whatever laptop you want and then get a 4G dongle that plugs into a USB port.

Optionally use your 4G phone plugged into USB, you may already be paying for unlimited data on your phone plan.
(I spent a year or so tethering my 3G+ phone to my laptop like that when I had no broadband landline).

You can tell the good computer manufacturers by looking at BIOS updates. Do they provide a an update that has a sha256 verification of the file? Acer does not do this so if you download a corrupted update and try to upgrade a possible serious problem could occur.

Crippled2013,

Unless dangerous or offensive members are free to post feedback that differs from what you or I may think but fwiw how often a brand releases BIOS updates does not prove how good or bad that any brand is.

Comps,

Once Windows has been installed, you install the necessary drivers for the MB and other hardware and then leave well alone  and the exact same policy applies to the BIOS, do not update it unless it is advised by the manufacturer of the hardware or alternatively if it is to allow for a CPU upgrade.

Updating things for no reason has a 50/50 chance of bricking your computer, don`t gamble unless you can (A) Do without the computer ( B ) have loads of spare cash and can buy a new one with no problem or ( C ) Both of the previous.

Crippled2013,

Of course you do and likewise no one has the right to say what you post is nonsense, the end goal is helping those who need it and that is all that matters.

Sorry but how was what compis post false, it is not quite accurate but it is neither dangerous or offensive and merely their opinion which they have a right to air.

Had compis initially post "  You can tell the good computer manufacturers by how good their continued support is " no one could have argued.

Fwiw, Acer at time of posting are rated seventh out of ten by users here don`t even get a mention by tech experts here and kind of ironically two brands that you don`t rate came out on top Readers' Choice winner

Airing opinions does not help the OP , the OP has enough info to go on + there is no point in squabbling about who is right or wrong here so lets just leave it at that.

I find this favoritism of compis to be repulsive by discriminating against me.

Now that is false, never even heard of compis before this thread but I do agree, there is no point in future discussion.

Crippled2013 You failed to understand the orignal post and are clearly trying to sway readers.

Acer does not supply verification for there BIOS with SHA256 unlike other manufacturers. The statement that you rarely need a BIOS update is irrelevant as its the support that is being reviewed here. good support makes sure htere users get the product and support they want. Since Acer does not provide verification for BIOS that is not good support.

Quite off topic

But I guess supermucro would be bad in your opinion since they don't.

Also note that when a computer is purchased there is nothing other than firmware software you want from the vendor. If that cannot be validated what else would you want from the vendor?

So i guess Clevo/Sager/XoticPC are terrible computer vendors because they don't provide hash values for their bios updates.

Just to let you know Clevos are far more superior then any laptop you can purchase from anywhere.

Sorry folks but being that the OP never even bothered to come back after their initial post why are you even bothering here, opinions are just that and having one does not entitle any of us to have the last word over another person.

I never heard of Clevo/Sager/XoticPC and yes it makes them a poor service provider if they provide a critical component firmware without allow the user to verify the firmware. Take a look at some well know P.C. makers like Lenovo or Dell.
