I currently still have a USG40 and need to upgrade for higher Internet service. Thought about Flex 100.

Does Zyxel have a good reputation? Is it considered "safe"?

I think not : https://www.techradar.com/search?searchTerm=zyxel

Reviews on Zyxel : https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&q=Zyxel+router+review&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwja5I_Inff5AhVIIzQIHYI_CJsQ1QJ6BAguEAE&biw=1920&bih=895

Only 41% give them 5 stars.

Might be useful info : https://www.techradar.com/search?searchTerm=ASUS+Routers

Others will be around with more info for you I am sure.

thanks.

Is it an indication to look at number of CVE's for a brand? e.g. Zyxel USG, pfsense on this website? I guess it does not cover severity.

Yea it shows how good of a company they are as they update/release to fix security problems.

Is worth while though most people run routers long past lifespan as well as never update it.

If router has a built in firewall then even better.  I believe you want something like that.

See if anything here as they do testing and reviews : https://www.techspot.com/  & https://www.techpowerup.com/

I'm not really clear what content there is in the above links to judt Zyxel in a positive or negative light.

However, one thing I can tell you is that it was recently discovered that they left a hardcoded backdoor in a series of their USGs. That is a big no no, as it was a great opportunity for hackers to get in if they could learn the credentials.

Anyways, I'd stay away. There are better choices for the money.

thanks. Regarding price point, most  seem significantly more expensive such as Sophos, Sonicwall, Fortinet. Except Negate which seems similar. However, does it have inline AV, IDP?

Does PFSense do what you need, or do you need features it doesn't offer?

my understanding is that Netgate does not come with anti-malware  and IPS out of the "box". But I am new to pfsense.

It looks like there are add-on modules like HAVP package and Snort which appear to be free. Are those the preferred packages?

I honestly don't know. But Google will tell you what parts are free vs. what is a paid module,

or included in their hardware devices if you buy a pre-made unit.
