I've done quite a bit of searching and comparing but would love to hear some thoughts from people rather than "review" sites that are sometimes biased.

I'm trying to convince a pastor friend of mine that even though his church is SMALL(in a small town), it would be beneficial to have a basic website with some information on it. We have a facebook page already but I think a website will be beneficial.
I've given him some options, paid vs not, and hope to discuss it with him this weekend.
My thoughts are that at least for now, it would be good to start with a free service... even if that means subdomain. This way there's no out of pocket costs for now.

So far, I'm looking at wix or wordpress as decent options for this. They're both in a lot of the current reviews and both look doable.
But I'd love to hear some feedback... some pros and cons that might be worth considering...  or, other options I may have overlooked.

I've done quite a bit of searching and comparing but would love to hear some thoughts from people rather than "review" sites that are sometimes biased.

Did you read everything I wrote or just skimmed it?
Sometimes I think people have been helping on forums for too long when they start answering questions by telling people to go google it. Might as well close down this whole forum as there is very little(if anything) discussed on this site that can't be googled somewhere else.
Pardon my seemingly critical response. I am not as agitated as I sound.
I have searched and compared quite a bit...
All of the "Christian" sites that offer things are vague, some I don't think actually offer free services like they claim, and they can be pretty limited. One of them offers you one single page, one single user, and limited options.
They all want to help but the wording on all of the sites are VERY manipulative towards their paid plans... They'll list the features of the paid plans but offer no info on the free ones.
I've already emailed support for one of them to ask exactly what a person gets. We'll see if they respond.

For now... as I said in my original post... I've been looking at things like wix and wordpress.com that offer free sites and hosting and, I BELIEVE, would offer more features and a better experience than the church based offerings. I could be wrong but that's how it's looking so far.
Weebly is another option but reviews have me still leaning towards wix over them. Reviews are tricky though. Sometimes their pros and cons aren't things I'd agree on, at least as far as being a pro or a con.
I was hoping to hear from people with experience(recent) with free site building/hosting services.
I spent quite a bit of time(lots of hours and hours, still have a dozen or so tabs open from yesterday) searching BEFORE I posted to get some other opinions here.

Edited to add:
Good job to whomever is cleaning up the spam. I've gotten three emails showing replies to this topic that were gone before I could look.

Depends what you want to use in the back end.        WYSIWYG and the stuff have to do to maintain places when there are hacks, you have to patch the code.

They say no fuss no muss type thing but.

I myself would use non of those as can code Responsive HTML sites/pages.     Or if as say the back end and is HTML can find free Website Templates and alter the code and pictures.

Would/could consider Blog websites, as that may work better for posting events and dates and times and to comment on the results of that.

EDIT : or incorporate the blog into the website, or a combo place.

We or most of us will; give you ideas to look at but to make decisions come up with a couple places and maybe will get a reply.  Not us having to maintain it or code it. or pay for it.

As well your Topic is : best free site building/hosting 2023? you have been provided with that.

There are many free website building and hosting platforms available in 2023, each with its own unique features and capabilities. Some of the most popular options include:

Wix - Wix is a popular website builder that offers a drag-and-drop interface and a wide range of templates and design options. It also offers free hosting, but with limited storage and bandwidth.

WordPress - WordPress is a popular content management system that can be used to build websites, blogs, and online stores. While WordPress itself is free, you will need to pay for hosting and a domain name.

Weebly - Weebly is a simple website builder that offers a range of templates and design options. It also offers free hosting with unlimited storage and bandwidth.

Google Sites - Google Sites is a free website builder that offers a simple drag-and-drop interface and integration with other Google services like Drive and Calendar.

GitHub Pages - GitHub Pages is a free hosting platform that allows you to host static websites directly from your GitHub repository.

I have a static website on GitHub Pages. You can host your static website directly from your GitHub repository.
