"Run as Administrator" now the only way to open Word or Excel.

Win11 latest updates, modern Laptop.  All been working great for months.  New windows update - then:

Excel and word now don't open on file click.

Need to open program exe with Run as Administrator now.  Then open file.

This causes me many problems due to way I work.

I did auto repair (which did reinstall of office), and I did some other stuff from MS articles - still same problem.

Yes, your Office applications are throwing many errors.

-- Do you get the same result when you open them from the Windows start menu that you get when you open them from a desktop shortcut?
(Your desktop shortcuts may be configured to "Run as administrator")

-- Have you tried a complete, clean uninstall & reinstall of MS Office?

Yes...same results.

 

And yes...auto repair of office did a reinstall (I assume uninstall first) - and same results.

It looks like a recent issue with the latest Office update: you should have Windhawk or any other code injecting app on your PC; if this is che case, you can add Office directory to Windhawk exclusions

AFAIK, a "repair" is not the same as a clean uninstall & reinstall of Office.
I would cleanly uninstall it, reboot and then cleanly reinstall.

Until someone else weighs in with additional suggestions, that specific error code *can* be caused by a failing hard drive.

You might want to run some basic hardware diagnostics on your hard drive.

PS There's no need to routinely use the QUOTE function. As you can see, it makes the thread hard to follow. Please just "reply" without it. Thank you.

Huh????

If this were a problem with the latest Office update, there would be hundreds/thousands of similar reports.

EDIT: The Topic Starter does have a Windhawk application on the computer. Its role in the Office problem is unclear. Perhaps try at least temporarily uninstalling Windhawk to see if it resolves the issue.

How do I do a clean install?   I don't have disks etc.  I have a fear if I uninstall I won't be able to install a new one.  (I don't know the keys/codes to my office - it came with my laptop when I bought it new).

I also have 2 office it seems like.  (both repaired today).

 

Windhawk never caused a problem before.  I only use 1 explorer / file manager tweak ....because MS took away a key feature (drag to parent folder above).

 

Done many hardware checks in DOS...all good.

I see at least two possible reasons for your issue:

 

1) Having two Office versions installed -- supposedly, it *can* be done without issues, but it is not recommended, especially if one is MS 365 (cloud) and one is standalone.

2) Windhawk: such "customizing" apps can and do eventually break Windows; IMHO they are not worth the trouble. Just because it was never a problem "before" does NOT mean that it has not caused a problem now, unfortunately.

 

I suggest:

1) At least temporarily uninstalling Windhawk - doing so may NOT fix your problem, as the damage has been done. You may need to perform a non-destructive repair install via an in-place upgrade: https://www.elevenforum.com/t/repair-install-windows-11-with-an-in-place-upgrade.418/

2) Cleanly and properly uninstalling one or the other Office version and then repairing (or reinstalling) the one you keep.

 

Others will (no doubt) have other, better advice.
