My personal favorite is Photoshop (surprise, surprise ). I find it to be really versatile and user-friendly, and the results always look great.

That said, there are plenty of other good options out there as well (GIMP, Lightroom, Pixelmator...), so it really depends on what you're looking for in a photo editor and what you need the software to do.

Photoshop is great, but if you don't want to pay for it, you can use the free online alternative Photopea, which offers almost all of the features that Photoshop does

Irfanview is user friendly and may be a good place to start.  It was my go to program.  Now I use Gimp because it is a more capable program but has a steeper learning curve.

The most suitable editor will depend very much on what your "art" consists of.

Photoshop and the GIMP (the GNU Image Manipulation Program) are both raster graphics editors, although they do have different work-flows. Many people get so used to one OR the other, they have great difficulty in using the alternative. Personally, I've used both alongside each other for over 15 years, and am so used to the pair of them I can switch editors mid-project without missing a beat.

For general 'playing around' with photos, there's a ton of suitable apps out there.....though MY favourite has to be PhotoScape, from Mooi Tech.

It all depends on what you're trying to do as to what the most suitable app will be.

Mike.

There are several good photo editing tools available. Each one of them has its own unique features and capabilities. The best-suited photo editing tool depends on your individual requirements, preferences, and budget considerations. Here are some of the most popular photo editing tools.

Adobe Photoshop: This is considered to be an industry-standard tool and is widely used by professionals. It comes with several advanced features like layering, masking, and advanced color correction.

Lightroom: This tool is great for organizing and processing large volumes of photos quickly. It also provides a wide range of editing tools including presets, filters, and brushes.

GIMP: This is an open-source and free tool and a great alternative to Photoshop. It comes with several similar features including masking and layering.

Affinity Photo: This tool is a robust and affordable alternative to Photoshop. It offers many of Photoshop’s features like layering, masking, and advanced color correction.

Snapseed: This is a mobile photo editing application that is free and available for Android as well as iOS. It offers multiple editing tools including selective adjustments, filters, and brushes.

Photoshop is always my number one choice for any type of photo editing.

If you don't have it, you can try the free online photo editor from MockoFun. It has non-destructive smart filters similar to Photoshop so it is a good alternative.

I just need to make the point here that you need to read the TOS of the Free Websites.  Using their services could result in the loss of your ownership of the photo.

For a cost effective alternative to Photoshop there is Corel Paint Shop Pro.  Been around long enough and is a great alternative and lots of on-line information and videos.

There are many out there, paid and free, and now with the advent of AI it has become easy to do complex operations almost automatically. I use Photoshop because it is good, but also because I know the program without being an expert. The thought of trying out another program and learn to use it, is quite frankly time consuming, so it is important to make a decision about which one to choose as quickly as possible.

The good thing about Photoshop is that there are free tutorials online for just about any operations one can imagine, and the paid subscription is very reasonable indeed, giving you the possibility to install 10 photo-related programs with the photography plan including Lightroom Classic and Lightroom cloud based. Another plus, the license is good for 2 computers as long as they are not used simultaneously...

Sanjay Pasari, as of my last knowledge, Adobe Photoshop remains one of the most widely used and powerful photo editing tools. It provides a comprehensive set of features for both basic and advanced photo editing. Additionally, Adobe Lightroom is another excellent choice, particularly for photographers, offering tools for organizing, editing, and enhancing photos.

Here are a few suggestions:

  •  Adobe Photoshop: Known for its versatility and powerful editing capabilities, Photoshop is an industry-standard for professional photo editing.

  • Adobe Lightroom: Great for photographers, Lightroom offers non-destructive editing, organization features, and seamless integration with the Adobe Creative Cloud.

  • Capture One: Popular among professional photographers, Capture One provides advanced color grading tools and tethered shooting capabilities.

  • Affinity Photo: A more affordable alternative to Photoshop, Affinity Photo offers a wide range of professional-level editing features.

  • Snapseed: If you're looking for a mobile solution, Snapseed is a powerful and user-friendly photo editing app available for both Android and iOS.
