Has anyone ever directly download and install VLC ? they appear to have an option but I do not see any documents on the installation. I find inconsistencies in VLC and would like to know if the direct download is different.

Hi, VLC has many download links, it is by flavour/s : https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&q=vlc+linux+download

EDIT to add VLC proper name : VideoLAN        Linux link is in the Pull Down Arrow which says Download VLC

If you can not see the Arrow on Download then a Ad Blocker or Browser setting is hiding it.

I should clarify I am talking about Linux. They do not have a simple download like windows. I have noticed that what appears to be the main binary located in /usr/bin/vlc has different files for different distros based on Debian.

for example the sha256 hash

debian
847cf2ed20c411cb8f196af86847fd9d36fcf0e164263c1ff28c6da0447c52ab

Solus
6a73a299aacca0ea48fe08bbcdaf23137b7ef668c8a187bd57ae35aaa04b3f86

i would expect the binaries to be the same. These are downloaded through apt-get install command.

VLC is open source and distros are welcome to build as they see fit so the hashes will be different.

I would expect the main library to be the same. Why would it be different ?

Why would what be different? Every Linux distribution maker can take VLC Source Code and various Libraries and recompile as they see fit change files as well to make their own VLC to support various things out of box on their distro.

You may be correct. VLC has issues where specified functions that are present in VLC do not work for some but seem to work for others. I included a youtube example and it does not work on Lnux or windows.

What changes to VLC would be occurring that prevents time display on a video ?

Time is a value of Metadata within the file so if it's not present it won't show.

That is the issue. The Youtube video shows it working and it is not the only one however when I try it on a few Linux distro's it does not work and I find it annoying that they put the functionality in VLC 3.0.20 and it does not work.

Is there an operating system that it does work ?

It varies on the Metadata and tags used

Metadata and or tags has nothing to do with a simple menu activation.

Can you give an example of a metadata function that prevents VLC from performing any function?

If the Metadata isn't available in the source it won't be enabled by any menu option.

I asked for an example of metadata for VLC.

The option to perform a on screen is available in Linux. You go to preferences, select show settings all the go to subtitles OSD, sub menu Marquee. But even though it is selected it does not show results.

If the video doesn't include a subtitles file if downloaded there won't be any subtitles in.

And if it's streaming from YouTube with closed captioning the closed captioning won't be there.

This post has nothing to do with subtitles.an example is displaying date and time continuously updated while a video is playing.

I would be interested in anyone that can get Marquee text background to work. What operating system if it worked ?
