Only if you want to use your desktop as a wired device (i.e. not connected to the internet via an Ethernet cable).

We need more information in order to best answer your question.

Short answer: No, not necessarily, if your desktop connects to the internet via "hard wire" (aka ethernet cable).

Longer answer: It depends. For example, if you have a newer Wifi-enabled printer, you might need or want to connect to it via wifi, if a USB or ethernet connection is unavailable or impractical. Other examples might be the need to connect multiple computers on a local network, etc.

Having said that, unless your desktop computer is ancient or very, very low-budget, it probably already has wifi hardware capabilities. The feature may be disabled, if it's not needed. You might need to update the wifi drivers if you plan to use that feature.

If you tell us a bit more about what you're trying to accomplish, we can provide more specific advice (for which we will ask you to run a few tools to provide some basic system info for us to work with).

Unless I misunderstood @hilfe's question, I *think* you may have it backwards???

One would "need" wifi on the desktop PC only if one were **NOT** connected to the internet via ethernet?

To answer this question, it depends on what you are trying to achieve .

Ethernet is better than Wi-Fi and you will not need to use it unless you want to.

If your machine comes with Wi-Fi - I.e. comes built in with your motherboard or your network card also has that capacity then you can use it. One useful benefit is that it will probably have Bluetooth so you can use that as you don’t get it automatically.

MS Will install it on Win10 most likely if you take the driver for it in Optional Updates.

As for other OS's no. You would need to take action unless the driver is already installed or is part of Setting Up those OS's.
