USB phone to PC connection / data transfer failure

I am trying to connect my new Lumia 435 Windows phone to my Windows Tablet PC via the cable supplied with the phone. It is clearly connecting as the phone is charged from the USB port. However, I cannot get the PC to detect the phone so I cannot transfer data between the two devices.

When connected with the USB cable the phone does not appear anywhere: in Devices, Portable Devices, Windows Explorer. The 'transfer my data' app says it cannot transfer.

I have read the Microsoft articles on connecting and syncing with USB / Bluetooth. I cannot find any solution to my problem. Can someone help with this?

I have ordered a new USB cable but are not hopeful it will solve the problem, so I am at the moment trying to get communication via WiFi to work.  I am using the Windows Store app PC Remote Server. It recognises my Tablet from the phone but will not connect to it. I have altered a variety of settings, including changing the network from public to private but with no success. It has been suggested that it may be a Firewall issue, my Windows Firewall is managed by Norton Anti-virus 360.

Any suggestions?

Did you download the drivers to your phone? Yes Android needs drivers! I am assuming that your phone is Android? You need them on your computer. Just like your Printer needs Drivers to work. You need Drivers so that your phone can talk to your Computer.

If you look at my first post you will see I said 'Windows' umia is now a Microsoft phones brand name.I still have not got the WiFi connection sorted but a key part of my difficulties has been resolved.The first thing I had tried,repeatedly, was the supplied data / power cable. After having tried other things without success I tried ordering a new cable,more in desperation than hope.The cable worked fine, instantly, with the phone appearing in Devices, Explorer, etc. As a test I transferred some music and pictures which worked OK.

So it seems Microsoft / Lumia supplied me with a dud cable.

You still need to download the phone app on your PC so they can exchange files between them.  Go to the app store if you've upgraded your PC OS to Windows 10 or to windowsphone.com then enter "windows phone app for desktop" and it'll take your straight to the FAQ page with a doqnload link.

Once you get the right version for your OS you'll be squared away

You may reset your windows phone and try again. If it does't work, then you have to download a new USB drive. My phone is Nokia 520

USB connection between phone and PC is now working fine with the new cable. The Windows Phone Desktop app, after weeks of refusing to run, has just suddenly sprung into life and is working OK (except for the Help link). Also some syncing between phone apps and PC has started working, though in one direction only, eg between WritePad (on phone) and Evernote (phone and PC).
