I started Win8.1 in safe mode (while I was trying to uninstall an anti-virus).
It gets as far as the Windows password screen - the cursor is flashing in the "password" box, waiting for input.
Touching the text input box doesn't bring up the keyboard. Swiping left doesn't bring up the options. No touch input does anything.
I'm not sure if the touchscreen isn't getting input, or if the input isn't being passed on.
If I restart, I get back to the same screen.
If I press Volume Up while powering up,I get to the hardware setup screen. None of the options seems relevant.
The only option left I haven't tried is "HDD recovery". I'm guessing that's going to wipe all my data, and I'd hate to do that and have it go back to the same "start in safe mode" loop.

Toshiba Encore 2 WT8-B 8" tablet. Windows 8.1

I've searched the manual, these forums, Google, etc. etc., without success.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

I can't say this will work but this amazon page shows an available keyboard using the Micro USB port of the tablet. Would it be possible to attach a USB keyboard to the tablet using a Micro USB to USB Type A adapter?

I'm not sure if you tablet has the available Micro USB port. You would need to find the appropriate adapter.

Would it be possible to attach a USB keyboard to the tablet using a Micro USB to USB Type A adapter?

Excellent suggestion, it actually occurred to me a few minutes after posting.  The good news is I have the adapter and a USB keyboard - the tablet responds to mouse input and keys now.

The bad news is that it now says the password is invalid! I can't figure out why starting in safe mode would affect that - it's showing me the logon screen for the same account I always use.

Now I'm scouring the forums looking for info on how to reset a Win 8 password.

Thanks for the suggestion.

See this post.

Deleted. The tablet does cannot boot from a USB.

Edit: Can you access the command prompt without needing a password? In Windows 8.1, at least on laptops and destops, you can get to the advanced boot options which allows you to use the command prompt by doing the following.

Boot the tablet and when you see the spinning circle force a shutdown by pressing the power key. Do this two more times and Windows should start up into the Advanced Boot Options where you have access to a command prompt. If you can access this command prompt without a password then see the following steps on editing the registry to enable the hidden Administrator Account. By doing this you can login to the Administrator Account and reset the password on your normal account. Be careful editing the registry.

Thanks for your replies.   I wound up doing a HDD reset.  I only use this tablet for a couple of limited purposes, and re-installing the required programs wasn't too bad.  I will keep your advice for later use, though.  Thanks
