I purchased a game for the original Xbox off of eBay, it just arrived but I noticed both sides of the disc have some damage.  The read side looks like it got some scratches when it popped off the spindle in shipping but the side with the label has a couple minor spots where it's scratched through the image.  My understanding is the label can have some damage and it wont impact the readability of the disc, but if the scratch goes too far the disc is unusable.  I have no plans to play the game any time soon, I don't have a TV that I can hook up to my old console, the space, or the time to play the game right now.  The seller is offering to refund me if I want to return it or he'll give it to me for half off.  I'd rather keep the game but if it's not going to work than I kind of don't need it.  I'm wondering if there is some software solution I can use?  I don't know if I can put the disc in my PC and run a program that will detect if there are any errors in the readability?

I'm not trying to pirate anything if anyone is worried about that.  To ease your mind, I only paid $15 for it and it's a game from 2001 (Max Payne).  I don't think there is a huge market for people wanting to pirate this game anymore lol.

Any help would be appreciated.  Reddit was not helpful.

Try this https://xemu.app/   A free and open-source application that emulates the original Microsoft Xbox game console, enabling people to play their original Xbox games on Windows

EDIT : not that into above may have to copy disk and make a ISO of it and play.

Hold up the disk to the a light and see if you can see through the scratches. The read side is the label side.

Pkshadow: I'll look into seeing if I can make an ISO. The instructions on the site look like I need to hook my Xbox up and use it to connect to my PC or something, so I'm going to see if I can find a way to do it with my external drive instead.

cryptodan: Hey!  Nice seeing you again.  You helped my out a few months ago, hope you're doing well.  I held it up to the light and I can see some light coming through.  The label is solid white and seems to block all light, where the scratch is I can faintly see some light coming through.

That means the scratches are minor. That's a good sign.
