Why is svchost.exe always such a processor hungry item

On every computer i have used i've always seen svchost.exe occurs multiple times and one of those occurences is also usually the most processor hungry item on the system. Why?
Back to visiting this site, every so often, been so busy in previous years.

There is always more than one service under each and you should be able to narrow it down to a specific one.
