IceChat
Guide Overview
The purpose of this guide is to teach you how to use IceChat to join the Bleeping Computer chatroom and any other chatrooms you may wish to join, as well as to learn how to configure IceChat to suit you.

NickServ is the commands that you use when you want to change anything having to do with nicknames, Chanserv anything to do with channels, Botserv anything to do with bots, Memoserv is anything to do with Memos, and the User Commands can be used by all users in any chatroom.

Instructions
- Double click on IceChat5. When it opens, click the Add button in the bottom right hand corner of the IceChat window.
Note: if you cannot see it, place your mouse pointer at the bottom of the Console bar on the right-hand side and drag the bar up. This will show you the bar underneath which is called the Favorite Server List.
- In the Server Name box type irc.geekshed.net
In the Server Port box type 6667 (ports 6660-6669 may all work but 6667 is the recommended port for IRC and is the one almost everyone uses).
In the Nickname box type what you would like to be known as in the chatrooms you join.
In the Alternative Nickname box specify an alternative nick to use in case you have a nickname collision or a problem with your original.
In the Away Nick box type in a nickname that will let others in the chatroom know you are away. You can change your name while in the channel to your away name if you will be gone for a while.
In the Quit Message box, you will see “$randquit.” This is a variable that IceChat has that has random silly/funny quit messages displayed when you quit a channel. If you wish you can leave $ranquit as your quit message, or, you can type anything in you would like to have as your quit message and change it anytime you want by selecting the server from the Favorite Server list and clicking “Edit’.
The Nickserv and Server Password boxes do not have to be filled in.
However, if you register in the chatroom (by typing /ns register youremailaddresshere yourpasswordhere) then if you type your chatroom password in these two boxes you will not have to identify yourself to NickServ every time you join the channel (/ns identify yourpasswordhere). It will automatically identify you by giving the password directly to the server and NickServ.
- Select the Ignore list. If you wish to ignore a user in the chatroom who is disturbing or bothering you, type their name in the top field and click Add.
Select the Additional Settings list. Not all settings will need to be used.
The only setting I use is the Autojoin list. To add a chatroom to the autojoin list, type #channelname. For example, type in #bleepingcomputer. Each IRC Channel has a # in front of the name, as specified by IRC protocol. If you wish to specify a password with which to join a channel type the password after a colon after the channel name. Example: #bleepingcomputer:yourpasswordhere. To save each channel you've typed in click the Add button.
Select the Buddy List Tab, you can add a buddy (friend) that you like by clicking Add and typing in the person’s name.
Most likely you will not use the AutoPerform or AutoDCCAccept, so we will ignore those in this tutorial.
Most likely you will also not use the BNC Settings tab which we will ignore.
If you happen to use a proxy server, then click Proxy Settings and check “Connect with proxy server”. Specify the protocol to be used (HTTP, Socksv4, Socksv5), type in the proxy IP address (four numbers separated by periods-you will have to look this number up), the proxy port used (a common one is 8080 but not always that specific one, you will also need to look this up), and type in your username and password.
- Finally, click the Save button at the bottom left. Then Click 'Connect now’. Congratulations, you are in the bleepingcomputer chatroom!
Each time afterwards you can merely click ‘Connect’ under the Favorite Server List rather than having to click ‘Edit’ and then click ‘Connect now’.
To change any settings you may wish to, click the Options tab at the top of the window and select Program Settings. This enables you to change the color, size, and font of the text, as well as name highlights, sound settings, server settings, and more. You can use any of the other options up on the menu at the top if you wish, the Program Settings is the only one I use.
