Hello. I am a former Navy veteran. I was an IT, though most of my work doesn't translate to civilian life. Anyway, I have been doing sales for the last 12 years and was considering a career change. I have some college credit now, maybe close to 2 years worth. Is it worth me going back to school and getting a degree in computer science or something similar, or would my time be better spent studying and getting some of these certifications? I am interested in cybersecurity. Is it even possible to earn these certificates if you do not have a degree already?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Security is and will always be of prime importance. It's a good decision to major in it. Especially with M/Soft pushing the Azure project, security is going to be top of the list in protecting the billions of data accounts in their "cloud".

Yes it is possible to obtain the certifications without a degree. However, since you're looking to change fields you'll be better off having a degree, in addition to certifications.  When looking for a job in IT employers want three things, degree, certifications, experience. If you have all three, finding a job is easy. If you have two you can find a job. If you only have one you will have a difficult time finding a job.

I don't have a degree, but I've been doing IT since the last century.  If I did have a degree it would have come when computing was DOS 6.2 and Windows 3.11.

As a Navy Veteran use your GI Bill and attend a yellow ribbon school and earn your degree. I used my GI Bill to get both my bachelors and my masters with over 6 months left on my GI Bill.

Cyber Security is a very broad field. If you aren't sure what you want do in InfoSec, than a Cyber Security degree might be a good choice. It will most likely give you a good overview of the field. However, if you want to be a pentester for example, than doing certifications might be a better route.
