I found this article that I remember reading in 1986.

It is an interesting analogy between Finland's historical relationship with Russia, and Canada's relationship with the United States.

Here is one of Gwynne Dyer's current essays on why Finland and Sweden chose to join NATO.

Farewell Neutrality: Sweden and Finland  2022-05-16

Putin has managed to accomplish something incredible.  He has destroyed a combined 300 years of neutrality.

Two of the big three Neutralities in Europe are now part of the Western Alliance.

Switzerland is leaning as well.  Although still militarily neutral, it has acted against Russia politically and economically.

And what did Mitt Romney say in 2012 against Obama?

https://www.cnn.com/2022/02/22/politics/mitt-romney-russia-ukraine/index.html

"In the third presidential debate between the two candidates in October 2012, Obama went directly after Romney for that remark. “When you were asked, ‘What’s the biggest geopolitical threat facing America,’ you said ‘Russia.’ Not al Qaeda; you said Russia,” Obama said. “And, the 1980s are now calling to ask for their foreign policy back, because the Cold War’s been over for 20 years.”"

And yet Obama still Won. Quite shameful that the United States didn't heed Romney's warning. In 2014 Crimea was Annexed by Russia under then President Obama and then Vice President Biden. It's quite the coincidence that under President Biden that Ukraine was Attacked.

Isn't amazing how so many people developed short term memories in 2016 and bashed everyone that criticized Obama as being racist. The world would be quite different had Trump won in 2020. It would likely be more peaceful since there were no new conflicts popping up in the 4 years, he was President, yet so many people accuse him of being bed buddies with Putin ignorance must be blissful as there is a lot of that running around the world, yet the world isn't happy.
