I realize this is a tricky question.

Please list all of the components you'd recommend for two computers - one for AMD and one for Intel.

My thought is that you don't need a PC - you just need a device that can simulate various CPUs by mimicking the heat output (including the size). Since LonGwin and any other companies that make such devices charge an arm and a leg for a complete device, and it's liable to be massive and require more limbs to pay the shipping, that doesn't seem viable. I don't have the technical skills to engineer and build such a device, either.

So, I'm stuck with this problem.

I know, I know, it can't just be one CPU from each to truly be able to test all coolers. The problem is, short of being majorly sponsored and finding a team of experts to design, build and run the tests, I don't think ANYONE has another option.

Unless you can design and build it for me. ;)

An open frame test bench case or an open chassis test bench, is this what you meant?

Welcome back from your move!

No, I have no interest in test benches. They are less representative of real results than most cases. I was asking about the entire computer(s), not just the case, too.

Because I lack the ability to design and build the equipment I need to test properly (i.e. in a more accurate way), I'm curious as to what people think would be the ideal AMD and/or Intel configurations - everything of importance anyways: case, CPU, mobo, RAM, GC, storage, PSU...

Overclocking?

High or low end desktop?

Gaming or work or general usage desktop?

Testing, primarily coolers.

CPUs with the most heat output then to be challenging?

I suppose a 5900X or 7900X or a i7-12700K or a I7-13700k (although an i9 would be idea) are OK.

Notice that Techpowerup reviews of coolers still uses the same CPU(s) when cooler testing first started (probably to keep historical tests for comparisons and to keep it simple)

and for AMD

Well, I'm in luck, then! I have the i7-12700k! It never thermal throttles or even gets anywhere close to 90C, though. I do agree that a HOT CPU would be the best option. I'm under the impression that there older CPUs that are also furnaces.

Yeah, I agree that TPU still uses the same CPUs in order to keep the data comparable. It's both a good and bad idea because the farther the current CPUs are from that old baseline, the less valuable the test results are for most people. At least, that's my theory.

The i7-12700k does have a max TJunction of 100 C. It's Maximum Turbo Power is 190 watts.

This maybe OK for your tests; the i9-13900 is drawing a little more at 219 watts and I don't think that the small difference in power is of any real concern.

Your present used i7 should be OK.

The 19-13900K does go to a max of 253 watts.

The 14th gen i9-*K does draw about  the same at it's max, but it's probably going to be surpassed in power draw by the 15th gen anyways.

However the i9 isn't a commonly used CPU for most gamers and home users, so it comes down to how soon (or long) before the more commonly used CPUs such as a future Intel i5 draws more power such as 250 watts (or more).

Or will the TJunction max temps of the future Intel CPUs actually go even higher than now?

Will any of this actually happen is anyone's guess.

I remember  my very dated Pentium 4 going for about 60 watts and the max  temp of roughly 70C.

The general trend does seem to be always increasing power draw.

I believe that, unless there's a paradigm shift, temps will keep going up. This is going to pose a significant problem for people who can't afford to cool their room, and is also going to force people to stay with older equipment as the cost of powering and cooling go too high.

I foresee that cooled chambers and cases will become the norm and, while expensive, will help somewhat. That said, though, I only know of one project to make a cooled case, and I don't think the guy has a prototype at this time. You can read about it here: https://linustechtips.com/topic/1537418-what-are-your-thoughts-on-an-integrated-phase-change-cooling-case-with-these-features-and-how-much-would-you-pay-for-it/.

Interesting.

The VRM and the latest M.2 drives have heavy duty heat sinks and maybe even more added onto the motherboard in the future, it maybe necessary to have some form of cheap and reliable system-wide cooling.

What about immersing the entire system into a container filled with some sort of non conductive liquid coolant and instead just keeping cooling that liquid? Would be maybe easier to do and effective too.

Possible too. The silicon/rare earths is limited by it's own design and maybe replaced in the future (maybe in the near future) with some other design - maybe even completely different from what we have today. And maybe much more efficient not just more powerful or capable.
