Preferably free, but I am willing to open my wallet.
I like all genres, I am not picky. I just want an overall good game that can keep me occupied for weeks to come.

Bejeweled;
something I do not remember the exact name, Boxed which you click on boxes or switch box positions and you eliminate neighboring groups of boxes - I actually do not remember exactly although I did enjoy the game.
Oktagon - something from AHA! Software, but not sure if still available
Ice-Breaker - some penguins move on a rectangular field and you supposed to isolate them - another I forgot exactly how the game goes but it was fun.
Ice Man - I am having trouble remembering exactly and how to describe this one...

If you like card games, on-line Bridge.I personally much prefer playing it in person but a lot of people enjoy playing on a computing device. It is one of the two great card games, the other being Poker in all its variations.

What type of game and what is your hardware? Using a gaming or a regular desktop?
Stragety or shoot them or RPG or other game? Browser or installed game?
Glest is old but free and will be entertaining, if this is your kind of game you are looking for in time wasters. It does run on anything (including XP) and on any hardware (a graphic card is not needed and the CPU graphics will play it). It was created by university students in Spain and Europe years ago. For Windows and Linux.
Glest - The Free Real-Time Strategy Game
Mega Glest was a branch and had a more recent versions: MegaGlest Also available for Linux and macOS, not just Windows.

"Fallout New Vegas" is very old but is considered to be one of the best RPG games ever made.
"The Outer Worlds" is close to it, and made by the same company, Obsidian Entertainment. It has a more updated version, but the original is still the best, IMO. There will be a second newer sequel version coming next year as it is in the work ATM.
"Red Dead Redeemption" is good too.
Need more suggestions?

"Starfield" is available ATM, but I am still waiting for the bugs to be fixed and patched before I try it. But it does need good hardware to be played at a decent frame rate and with good settings.

Cannot currently find the game Oktagon through a web search. Nothing like the one I had used several years ago. Also what I find of "AHA! Software" is not the same thing any more; what I find so far is totally unrelated. Oktagon was a fun puzzle game, user is given scambled puzzle pieces which he must rotate and place into positions to fill a regular octagon shape.
I did find this video demonstration of Oktagon:
Unfortunately the best I can find currently is the family games site but I do not find Oktagon shown or listed there:
