I would like to see a tutorial about how to create a bootable XP Recovery Console CD if there is no XP media available.

I already know how, and can paste my instructions into a topic where somebody needs one, but it would be nice if I could refer someone to the Tutorials section, search for recovery console and find the Create a Bootable Recovery Console CD instructions so they could run simple things like chkdsk or work on their afflicted boot.ini, etc.

I ALWAYS want to start with RC when I see the dreaded:

Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

Or hal.dll is missing or corrupt (when it's not really missing or corrupt)

And the one where the add the /SAFEBOOT and find themselves stuck.

Not very exciting problems usually, but fixed fastest with RC.

I will be happy to write the article if there is some special article template to get me started.

Of course there are many ways. Here are part of my standard how to do it notes to help people get started.

You can make a bootable Recovery Console CD by downloading an ISO file and burning it to a CD.

The bootable ISO image file you need to download is called:

xp_rec_con.iso

Download the ISO file from here:

Use this free and easy program to create your bootable CD:

It would be a good idea to test your bootable CD on the computer that is working.

You may need to adjust the computer BIOS settings to use the CD ROM drive as the first boot device instead of the hard disk. These adjustments are made before Windows tries to load. If you miss it, you will have to reboot the system again.

When you boot on the CD, follow the prompts:

Press any key to boot from CD...

The Windows Setup... will proceed.

Press 'R' to enter the Recovery Console.

Select the installation you want to access (usually 1: C:\WINDOWS)

You may be asked to enter the Administrator password (usually empty).

You should be in the C:\WINDOWS folder. This is the same as the C:\WINDOWS folder you see in explorer.

Actually, I have been pondering this for a while feeling something could be done.

Given the pages of tutorials, what would you say would be some good user generated examples to look at?

Of course I have looked at them all at one time or another, but if you could fill in the blank:

A good example of a user written tutorial to use as an example for writing your own is ____________________.

I suggest you just follow the template, and use images whenever possible.
Try to keep it a simple as possible.
You have to remember, a lot of our members are novice computer users, so the less "technical", the better.
That's where images come in handy.
Remember the old adage; A picture, is worth a thousand words. :thumbsup:

Here is what I have so far, please let me know if/what adjustments are needed and I will do better on the next one.

I am not up to images yet, but have a question about it. In the forums, folks use imageshack or something similar to put up links to their images that reside on some other WWW site. But sometimes, I see something like a screen shot in a post that when I click it, it does not seem to go to imageshack from the URL information I see - it is like it is somehow inside/attached to the post. How does that work or am I just not reading it right...

How can I insert something like a screenshot into a post without using some third party WWW site to host the image?

How to Create a Bootable XP Recovery Console CD

Guide Overview

The purpose of this guide is to teach you how to create a bootable XP Recovery Console CD.

The Recovery Console may already be installed on your system as a boot option and is also available
when booting from a genuine XP installation CD. If you do not have those options, it is easy to create
a bootable XP Recovery Console CD.

Recovery Console is not available from the set of System or Recovery CDs that may
have been included with your system when it came from the store or manufacturer.

This bootable CD is compatible with all versions of XP (Home, Pro, MCE). It may not be
suitable for hardware configurations that have RAID configurations.

You do not need any Microsoft Windows XP media to create the Bootable Recovery Console CD.

The Recovery Console can be used to troubleshoot and perhaps repair systems that will not boot
into Windows XP. The Recovery Console includes commands to verify the integrity of your
file system, repair or replace possibly corrupted or suspicious files and basic file manipulation
commands (copy, rename, delete).

Once your system has been repaired with Recovery Console and Windows boots normally, the original
issue that caused the system not to boot in the first place can be addressed.

Tools NeededA working system that has hardware and software capable of burning a bootable CD

A copy of the XP Recovery Console ISO file
Instructions

Step1

The XP Recovery Console ISO file could be found in several places on the Internet. For this
example we will use a file called:

xp_rec_con.iso

The XP Recovery File ISO file be downloaded from here:

Step2

If you do not already have a program installed on your computer that will burn CDs,
there are many free software packages on the Internet. Be sure the program can create
bootable CDs from ISO files and not just burn/copy files to a CD.

Here is a free and easy to use program to create a bootable CD from an existing ISO file:

Step3

It would be a good idea to test your bootable CD on the computer that is working.

You may need to adjust the computer BIOS settings to use the CD ROM drive

If your system is not set to boot from the CD as the first option, check your
hardware manufacturers instructions to configure your system BIOS so the CD drive

Step 4

Step 5

Follow whatever instructions or guidance you receive to help restore your system to
working order.

Remove the CD and type 'exit' to leave the Recovery Console and restart the computer.

You do not have to adjust the BIOS again to boot on the HDD since the CD will
not be present.

Three shots, but if I "Inspect Element" with Chrome, it doesn't show photobucket or imageshack - how did those 3 images get into a post without photobucket or imageshack?

In Step 2, I'd add this link, also:

That way, they don't have to try and figure out how to do it, if they're not familiar with ImgBurn. :thumbsup:

As far as the images go, host them at photobucket for now, to see what they look like in the tut.
Once your tut is finished, and approved, Grinler will probably host them on BC, and you'll be able to remove them from Photobucket.

Try to keep you images smaller than 500w x 400h, to keep the board's software from reducing them.
That way you don't have to keep clicking images, while following the tut, to view them full size.
Too, distracting. :flowers:

Also, keeping the image's file size as small as possible, will help with loading the page quicker.
Some of our members are still on dial-up, so that would help them out.
The easiest way to do that, would be to get the image the size you want it, and then start playing around with, reducing the quality.
You can usually reduce the quality quite a bit, without degrading the image so much, that it's not clear.

I don't think I need any screenshots in this one, but might in some future "tuts".

I want to know if it is possible (as it appears in the user post I referenced) to put in a screenshot without using photobucket or imageshack. I know how to do it with those.

There are lots of tutorials and other user posts that seem to have shots "embedded" that do not appear linked back to a third party hosting site. How can I do that?

Look at http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/slipstreaming-windows-xp-to-create-bootable-cd/ and all those shots. Unless I am missing something, they don't go to another site.

One I get all this figured out, I really hope to be more self sufficient.
