If you are using Windows 7 or 8/8.1 there is a much simpler way to burn a ISO image.

1.  Place a blank CD or DVD in the tray of your optical drive and close the tray.

2.  After you have downloaded the ISO image you want to burn right click on the Start orb, then choose Windows Explorer.

3.  When Explorer opens click on Downloads in the left pane.  Scroll down till you find the ISO file you want and double click on it.  Click on Burn Disk Image.

4.  In the image below you will see Disk burner:, this should be set to the optical drive you want to use.  Click on Verify disc after burning if you want to Windows to verity the disc image after burn.  Click on burn.

5.  In the image below you can see that the green progress bar, when the image is finished burning the bar will be filled.

6.  After the image has completed being burned click on Close

Well, now you have two options on how to create a bootable disk.

Give us some feedback so dc3 and I know how it went.

I personally don't need the feed back.  This is a well documented method, it doesn't need a rebuttal. :hysterical:

I'm sorry bc3. We're not talking about rebuttals. Just to know if he managed to create the disk or if he would need additional support. I'm just trying to help.

ImgBurn is more reliable.  Any time I burn using Windows 7, none of the other drives can read it.  Build 7601, in case someone asks.

Even when you follow the master instructions, it never works in Win7.  I have to use Linux, or ImgBurn to make it truly usable in some other computer.  Win7 only formats for Win7.  Very disappointing.

I don't experience this problem.

The members who I've suggested the use of this have not reported any problems related to this either.

If you can't use Hirens then use Easy Recovery. It will give you a bootable disk. Not ISO. And it's easy to run.

A slightly more complicated route is to use System Rescue. This produces a ISO bootable disk.

Despite some bad press I prefer using Power ISO instead of ImgBurn. It's more user friendly and you can easily create a ISO disk, and it will tell you if it's bootable or not. I've never had any virus/malware experience with Power ISO.

You can also add recovery console to boot menu. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/307654

My Windows 11 system is secure, because I can't install it.

I am facing these same issues https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/if-my-computer-wont-boot-how-can-i-fix-haldll/76b716c0-7f8e-4cf9-8f0d-8f84d4ee047a

"I have a dell Computer. (I however have an "emachine").  I run XP Pro. (Home Edition). The computer will not go past the black screen in the beginning of startup where it says, Missing or corrupt hal.dll needs to be replaced. I have no recovery disc, as none came with it."

I searched around a bit and in many cases it depended on boot.ini being damaged. Before this problem occured I attempted to change the boot options from two to one.

I ran "chkdisk" in "cmd" in Hirens but that didn't seem to fix anything, it just told me in the end how much space I have. I attempted "bootcfg" but it wasn't a recognized command. I peeked at the other options but it all looked really complicated- I don't know anything about computers so I didn't want to try anything that would make things worse.

Next I tried xp_rec_con, found here https://web.archive.org/web/20111010200305/http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/tools/bootdiscs/xp_rec_con.zip. The "emachine" doesn't have a cd-tray so i'm using a usb. "Rufus" said that it didn't support it, so I tried RMPrepUSB which seemed to work fine but now the usb won't boot. It just loads to the hal.dll error. I have tried "lubutu" before Hirens and it booted fine, with some errors it moves past, Hirens boots without any errors.

Please help :(

Sorry. I ran out of options. I also have used the Aomei Backup Boot Disk, but you need to have made an Aomei System Backup first. I do one every month and after the third month I erase the oldest one.

Rufus will not recognize the xp_ec_con.iso (or at least it didn't used to work) and there are a half a dozen other reasons why using xp_rec_con.iso might not work out.

The question becomes - do you want to use something that might work sometimes on some systems or do you want to use something that will work all the time on all systems?

If you want something that will work all the time on all systems then use Hiren's on either a CD/DCD or bootable USB.

If you think you have a bootable USB and if your system is able to boot from USB and if your system is configured to boot from that before the hard drive it should work (with Hirens').  If you still see the hal.dll message your system for some reason did not attempt to boot from the USB and has gone back to the hard driver - there should be no hal.dll message if you boot on Hiren's.

If from Hiren's your chkdsk with error correction (chkdsk  /r) ran fine and you suspect the boot.ini file...  you can't run bootcfg from Hiren's because that is a Windows command.

If you suspect the boot.ini file then from Hiren's Command Prompt rename the boot.ini file to something you can remember (boot.xxx) so now the file is "missing":

rename   c:\boot.ini   c:\boot.xxx

In a single partition installation XP will boot just fine without a boot.ini file.

You will see a message like this:

Invalid BOOT.INI file
Booting from C:\windows\

Then once you have Windows loaded you can use bootcfg to create a new boot.ini file and delete the old/suspicious boot.xxx file.

The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates.

Suggestions that begin with the word "try" are often wild goose chases.  Try not.  Do or do not.  There is no try.

Does a suggestion that says "it's worth a try" and "let us know how it goes" instill confidence?

Reinstalling Windows should not count as a "solution".

I would like to see a tutorial about how to create a bootable XP Recovery Console CD if there is no XP media available.

I already know how, and can paste my instructions into a topic where somebody needs one, but it would be nice if I could refer someone to the Tutorials section, search for recovery console and find the Create a Bootable Recovery Console CD instructions so they could run simple things like chkdsk or work on their afflicted boot.ini, etc.

I ALWAYS want to start with RC when I see the dreaded:

Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

Or hal.dll is missing or corrupt (when it's not really missing or corrupt)

And the one where the add the /SAFEBOOT and find themselves stuck.

Not very exciting problems usually, but fixed fastest with RC.

I will be happy to write the article if there is some special article template to get me started.

Of course there are many ways. Here are part of my standard how to do it notes to help people get started.

You can make a bootable Recovery Console CD by downloading an ISO file and burning it to a CD.

The bootable ISO image file you need to download is called:

xp_rec_con.iso

Download the ISO file from here:

cialis senza ricetta

http://www.mediafire.com/?ueyyzfymmig

Use this free and easy program to create your bootable CD:

http://www.imgburn.com/

It would be a good idea to test your bootable CD on the computer that is working.

You may need to adjust the computer BIOS settings to use the CD ROM drive as the first boot device instead of the hard disk. These adjustments are made before Windows tries to load. If you miss it, you will have to reboot the system again.

When you boot on the CD, follow the prompts:

Press any key to boot from CD...

The Windows Setup... will proceed.

Press 'R' to enter the Recovery Console.

Select the installation you want to access (usually 1: C:\WINDOWS)

You may be asked to enter the Administrator password (usually empty).

You should be in the C:\WINDOWS folder. This is the same as the C:\WINDOWS folder you see in explorer.
