I know copy right laws vary from nation to nation but here in the US it's not legal to make an archive of your DVD/Blu Ray collection. But it is legal to copy your CDs as long as you don't share them online. http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/topic/250669-copyright-laws-and-how-they-apply-to-geeks-to-go-policy/ I wish it was legal to archive of your DVD/Blu Ray collection as well, because imagine having a Raspberry Pi or some other small affordable computer and being able to play all of your DVDs & Blu Rays on one device no need to put them in your DVD/Blu Ray player it would all be in one place. And yes I know there streaming services out there but they don't have everything available like certain niche movies for example.

Anyway please share your thoughts.

I wished that was the case in the UK... You can't even legally rip CDs here...

Yeah I know in fact it was legal to copy all of your media in the UK for a short while there but then the stupid lobbyist had to ruin it.  :nono:  Shoot I'm mean if you buy it then you should have the right copy it, its not like your going to upload it to a file sharing site. :rolleyes:

Well even so its very hard to enforce, but that doesnt stop draconian laws from happening like the recent article 13 in the EU

@SuperSapien64

Yep, Lobbyists ruin everything :/

Hopefully we don't plunder into more madness with Article 11 and Article 13 of the new EU copyright law...

Speaking of Article 11 and Article 13 here's a video from the EFF about that.  There's still time to stop #Article11 and #Article13. Here's how: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wjqCT9Exq58

I do not think copyright laws every envisioned the tech age. If computer programs were only protected with patents they would be available to all to improve and/ or offer generically.

@SuperSapien64, If you're in the EU (Including the UK), you can contact your MEP to be against article 11 and 13

There's this software called MakeMKV and it can be used to play DVDs and Blu Rays in the VLC Player or even make backups of them. But once again the DMCA doesn't like and this software has been in beta for years now. But supposably works well. Shoot as physical media becomes more obsolete whats the harm of backing up your media? :rolleyes: I mean my neighbor backed some of her vinyl records for archiving I mean she owns them not like she is going to share them online on some pirate site.

My understanding of the copyright laws also included computer software but only in the "backup" sense.  Normally, I always make a copy of whatever I'm going to be viewing in case something does go wrong with the original, it has been known to happen.  As I understand it, as long as you derive no income or profit in any way from making and storing a copy for later use or as archive material.
