Forum rules.

No subject matter will be allowed whose purpose is to defeat existing copyright or security measures. If a user persists and/or the activity is obviously illegal the moderators reserve the right to remove such content and/or ban the user. This would also mean encouraging the use or continued use of pirated software is not permitted, and subject to the same consequence

I have a nearby 'warehouse' full of movies,

It's called a public library.

And it's networked with most other libraries in my state, for hard to find examples.

Sorry NickAu I don't mean anything malicious by this I just find it kinda dumb about the outdated DMCA rules, and the software mentioned was just an example.

If you want please feel free to lock this discussion. :)

An example of the DMCA of being outdated on YouTube you can't even do a proper parody of a song anymore (because it sounds to much like the original even though a parody falls under fair use).

How can I transfer some of my old records and get away from that technology, but make it less noisy?

Moving a recording into a new format is usually referred to as transferring or migrating. The reason to do this is usually because of the aging of the tape or other medium or because of the upcoming obsolescence of the old technology. However, copying to another medium may also be done to reduce space requirements or to make a copy that has less unwanted noise upon playback.

There are several audio software programs on the market that can record music or voice from 78-rpm records or 33 1/3-rpm records and that, once recorded, reduce the unwanted surface noise automatically. These programs include Cool Edit with the plug-in Audio Cleanup, DART Pro, and Sound Forge with the plug-in Noise Reduction. These programs require a good-quality sound card in your computer and may require a computer technician to set them up. If you are not comfortable with connecting stereo components, this may be more of a challenge than you might want.

Once you have recorded audio files, you have the option of leaving them on the computer or recording them onto a CD-R, DVD-R or other digital storage format. Be sure to keep your original record. Some collectors also keep copies of the original digital recording before subjecting them to the noise filtering process. Remember that technological advancements in the future may enable you to create a better recording than is possible today.

Can I backup my computer software?
Yes, under certain conditions as provided by section 117 of the Copyright Act. Although the precise term used under section 117 is archival copy, not backup copy, these terms today are used interchangeably. This privilege extends only to computer programs and not to other types of works. Under section 117, you or someone you authorize may make a copy of an original computer program if the new copy is being made for archival (i.e., backup) purposes only; you are the legal owner of the copy; and any copy made for archival purposes is either destroyed, or transferred with the original copy, once the original copy is sold, given away, or otherwise transferred.

You are not permitted under section 117 to make a backup copy of other material on a computer's hard drive, such as other copyrighted works that have been downloaded (e.g., music, films).

In the US copyright protection is covered by tort law.

It's a civil offense concerning damages and it takes the victim to initiate legal action to address damages.

So....if no one knows.....

@ cryptodan

I'm not sure about backing up the installers for other closed source software but Adobe will try to sue if your using an older version of their software.

Adobe signed it's own obituary 2011, when it switched to an outrageously priced pay as you go subscription license fee.

My version is twenty four years old.  It is no longer updated or supported.  It still does what I need it to do.  I use it for my personal projects.  As I recall, at the time, there was never anything that said I had to buy a new version because my license would expire.

That Adobe 'warning' was from 2019.....I'm not aware of much happening since.

But I have no intention on getting on that subscription treadmill with any software.

So far, I don't have to.

One corporate giant decided to distribute machines that only has a simple card reader, keyboard and mouse.  The key cards were employee specific and allowed access to any functions within their job scope including any user specific data files.  None of which resided on that machine, it was all fetched from a mainframe.  The card would work in other machines outside the employees assigned area for directors and division users for meetings and presentations.  An idea that fostered the mainframe and terminals of old  (60's & 70's) before the PC took over and made the idea even better.  Peripherals were location identified so outputs could be printed anywhere a printer existed in the network.

You can always use Gimp as a alternative to Photoshop and other open source software replace most of Adobe's products.

I've test driven Gimp, but it's more than I need.

I've even acquired Adobe CS2 at an auction that included Photoshop....but it's also more than I need.  And since I don't need it, it's no longer installed.

For quick and dirty photo editing..for the monitor.....Irfanview works well for me, and for more serious editing and repair, I have an old PaintShop Pro 7 SE that was a free download.

I've gone to opensource LibreOffice on both Windows and Linux platforms.

I do have Acrobat 8 pro for my Windows computer, but MasterPDFEditor 4 works just as well on my Linux comp.

There's a lot of legal open source/freeware out there if a person just takes a little time to search for it.

I used to hang out at Ars when they had a thread devoted to free and legal apps for Windows. Even a couple of MS apps.

MS ICE for stitching panoramics is still one of my favorites.

I think MS has removed the link. I don't know what replaced it. There are/were 2 versions, I prefer the first one.
